Confirmed – Vanquis Banking Group
Date – Wednesday 22nd May 2025
Organisation Details
Saif Space began out of witnessing a young person so overcome with hunger that he resorted to stealing fruit from one of the group sessions. That one act opened our eyes and was the driving force in creating Saifspace. The name comes from the founder Saif, a retired police officer who is deeply passionate about supporting disadvantaged young people. In 18 months Saif has established a regular boxing club, healthy eating club, reignited the youth centre café and started a breakfast club. This has been achieved by pulling the community together with volunteers and very little funding.
Project Details
The Challenge is to create an engaging, educational space at the Buttershaw Youth Centre. Aside from providing a resource to work with young people around growing produce and healthy eating, they also plan to use the produce to stock the cafe:
• Clearing ground
• Constructing raised beds
• Creating informal pathways
• Construct and Install benches
• Paint exterior walls of the area
On-site support
On the day Participate will be providing a member of staff to support the volunteers. A trained first aider and first aid kit will be available during the challenge. A tools talk and health and safety briefing will be given by Participate at the beginning of the day.
Preparation
Volunteers will be undertaking construction, gardening and painting activities and are required to wear old and reasonably robust clothing. Volunteers should pay particular attention to footwear wearing tough shoes or boots. This is a relatively low risk challenge and where personal protective equipment is required it will be provided. This will include latex free gloves to protect rings etc when painting. Please be aware if you are painting, you will get this on your clothing and will not wash out. Again we recommend wearing clothing you don’t mind spoiling. If volunteers wish to bring their own gloves they are welcome to do so. This challenge is taking place outdoors and as such the volunteers should be prepared for inclement weather or sunshine.
Materials, tools and equipment
Tools and materials will be provided by Participate Projects
